National men’s double’s pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik will once again find themselves potentially settling for bronze after losing to rivals and world No. 1 Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang.
The world No. 4 pair won the bronze medal after defeating Indonesia’s Muhammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
During the extremely tense first set, Aaron-Wooi Yik didn’t let their foot off the gas and constantly delivered powerful smashes at the Chinese pair. But they were unable to close it out and lost 19-21.
Despite losing the first set, they kept their composure and maintained the same level of aggression and gave Liang-Weng a run for their money, eventually securing the second set with a 21-14 score.
Similar to the first two sets, the third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair, with both sides not wanting to unnecessarily bleed points away. However, Liang-Weng managed to hold out to the bitter end before ending the match with a 21-17 score.

Like Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, this is the second time Aaron-Wooi Yik have lost to their Chinese opponents, where they lost 22-24, 14-21 to Liang-Weng at the group stage, which forced them to settle as runner-ups for their group.
They will face either Denmark’s Kim Astrup-Anders Rasmussen or Taiwan’s Lee Yang-Wang Chi-Lin for the bronze medal tomorrow (Aug 2).
