M’sian kampung chicken is now being sold for RM72 per kg in SG

Following the implementation of the chicken export ban in Malaysia on Tuesday (June 1), Singapore is now facing a chicken supply shortage, resulting in the price of chicken rising to unprecedented levels.

A photo showing a 3.21kg bag of organic kampung chicken at NTUC Fairprice has recently gone viral due to its shocking price tag.

According to price tag, the chicken was listed a product of Malaysia and is currently being sold for S$72.27 (RM230), meaning that one has to pay at least S$22.50 (RM72) per kg!

NTUC: It’s the price for two

Shortly after the photo went viral, NTUC Fairprice issued a statement clarifying the issue.

We are aware of a photograph being shared of a price label for “SB Whole Chicken” affixed on Swiss Butchery-branded packaging.

“This product is priced at S$22.50/kg (per the label’s packed date on 31 May 2022), and the product label also showed the product weight of over 3kg as 2 whole birds were packed together, weighed and priced under the same label.
