Bribery over a contraband cigarette

According to Malay Mail, during a raid by Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and Health Sciences Authority, 34-year-old Hasan Kamrul, a Bangladeshi worker, was caught with a single contraband cigarette.

Instead of reporting the offence as required, Tanayogaraj demanded S$30 (approximately RM97) from Hasan to let him off.

Short of cash, Hasan borrowed S$14 (approximately RM45) from a friend and returned to the guardhouse, handing over S$29 (about RM95) to Tanayogaraj.

Cleaner unveils the truth

After the exchange, Tanayogaraj used part of the bribe to buy an energy drink and hid the remaining S$27 (about RM87) under a computer mat at his workstation.

However, a cleaner at the dormitory observed Hasan borrowing money and saw the transaction, prompting the cleaner to report the incident.

When questioned, Tanayogaraj initially denied accepting the money. However, during a search of the guardhouse, authorities found the hidden S$27 (approximately RM87), leading to his arrest.

Tanayogaraj pleaded guilty to charges of bribery and unlawfully possessing Hasan’s work pass.

He was eventually sentenced to four weeks in jail and fined S$2 (approx. RM6).
