PAS Tightens Ban On Unisex Hair Salons In Terengganu

PAS has increased enforcement of the state’s prohibition on unisex hair salons in Terengganu, and businesses that violate the gender-segregation licencing law will face fines ranging from RM500 to RM1,000.

Alias Razak, a state executive councillor, emphasised that this was not a new law but rather an existing licencing policy under the local government’s jurisdiction.

Be it Muslim or non-Muslim owners, their barbershops are not allowed to provide haircut services for the opposite sex.

Those who fail to abide by the law will be fined, or their licence will be revoked.

“There is no exception for non-Muslim-owned hair salons or barbershops. If we allow non-Muslim female hairdressers to trim male customers’ hair, Muslim men will be able to attend the store,”he said.

According to reports, state-appointed assemblywoman Zuraida Md Noor has asked for enforcement action to assure that barbershops and spas in the state follow Syariah criteria and gender-segregation regulations.
