Penang Teacher Who Allegedly Attacked Wife With Knife Was Facing Financial Troubles

A primary school teacher in Penang reportedly attempted to kill his wife before harming himself, with police believing the incident was sparked by an argument over financial.

According to a report by NST, initial investigations by the police indicate that the 30-year-old suspect had accumulated debt from a bank loan for stock market investments and from “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) purchases on e-commerce platforms.

Southwest district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam confirmed that the couple’s argument was over these debts.

He also clarified that the claims of the suspect owing money to illegal loan sharks were untrue, stating that his loan was with a “legal financial institution.”

Wife discharged from hospital

The 28-year-old victim, who is also a teacher, has been discharged from Penang Hospital but is still recovering and unable to speak much.

Police have already taken her statement. The husband is currently at the Jalan Perak Psychiatric Ward for a mental health examination.

The incident took place at their home in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, at 6am on Wednesday, when the suspect allegedly attacked his wife with a kitchen knife before turning the weapon on himself.
